Every day on her way home from work, Mrs. Fernando noticed Yapa, quietly sitting in a corner, a picture of loneliness and despair. Intrigued by his presence, she struck up a conversation about him with her driver, learning of the hardships Yapa faced as he was pushed from one corner of the lane to another by house owners.
 
Driven by a desire to make a difference, Mrs. Fernando extended a helping hand to Yapa, offering him a second chance at a dignified life. She brought him under the wing of Neil Marine Boat Yard in Negombo, where he found solace and purpose amidst the sounds of boat construction and the scent of the sea.
